Sapa and Mu Cang Chai are the best places in Vietnam for landscape and famous for the terraced fields of gold.
Sapa is one of the most famous tourist attractions for rice terraces. Due to climate, only one crop per year is produced. You can see the rice terrace fields in the Muong Hoa valley between Sapa town and Fansipan Mountain. The best time to tour around Sapa should be from June to early October, which is also in harvest season when the terraced rice fields turn into yellow bloom.
Mu Cang Chai is 300 km away from Hanoi. This place has a fame for its 700 hectares of terraced rice fields that attracts a stream of tourist and photographers visiting between September- October when it’s in the ripe rice season. Day 1: Arrive at Noi Bai airport to Sapa.
From Hanoi to Sapa via Express at night, it takes about 7 hours with arrival in morning
Day 2: First night camping.
From Sapa town, we take a sort cable car to to 3143m, then birding on the way down 2800m for first night camping. Our target here as: Black-faced, Scaly, Silver-eared, Red-winged Laughingthrushes, endemic Tonkin (White-browed) Fuvetta, Manipur, White-collared, Stripe-throated Fulvettas, Bar-throated Yuhinas, Spot-bressted, Golden Parrotbills, Sickle-billed Scimitar Babbler, White-browned Bush-robin, Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Mountain Bambbo Partridge, rarest Temminck’s Tragopan, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Scarlet-breasted Sunbird( local form of Gould’s Sunbird), Cook’s Swift, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Pygmy and Scaly-breasted Cupwing, … a new recorded to Vietnam since 2010, Bar-winged Wren Babbler.
Day 3:
Departing at early morning bird on the way down 2100m for our main target is Pale-throated Wren Babbler the first endemic from Tonkin. The 2nd night camping at Tram Ton.
Day 4: Tram Ton to Sapa town.
A morning birding around Tram Ton for main target Pale-throated Wren. Others species as: Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, white-tailed, Chestnut-belled Nuthatche and rarest Beautiful Nuthatch, Golden Parrotbill, Black-faced Warbler. Wintering Warblers.
Overnight at Sapa.
Day 5: Sapa – Mu Cang Chai.
Departing at early morning to Mu Cang Chai, Our two main target endemic: White-throated Wren Babbler and Pale-throated Wren Babbler.
Overnight at Mu Cang Chai.
Day 6 – 7:
Two full day at Mu Cang Chai for White-throated and Pale-throated Wren Babblers. Others beautiful species as: Pale-billed Parrotbill, Yellow-bellied Fantail, Striated Bulbul, Black-faced Warbler, Spectaled Barwing, Steaked Barwing, Blue-fronted Robin, Spotted Elachura, Rusty-capped, Golden-breasted Fulvettas, Grey-breasted Shrike Babbler, Blue-winged Laughingthrush, Yellow-bellied Avadavat, Crested Bunting, Himalayan Shortwing, Red-tailed Minla , Chinese Grassbird, Scarlet-faced Liocichla, and others migrant present.
Overnight at Mu Cang Chai.
Day 10: Yokdon National Park.
A full day birding at Yokdon with our good birds are: White-rumped Pygmy Falcon, and White-bellied, Great Slaty, Rufous-bellied, Black-headed, Black-naped, and Fulvous-breasted, Rufous, Streak-breasted, Woodpeckers and rarest Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, Common, Greater Flameback, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, White-browed Fantail. Wooly-necked Stork is very good number here as well. Then take an afternoon driving to Mang Den Plateau.
Overnight at Mang Den.
Day 8: Mu Cang Chai – Sapa town.
A morning birding at Mu Cang Chai then heading to Sapa again. Overnight at Topas Riverside Lodge. Birding around this area for Brown Dipper.
Overnight at Sapa.
Day 9: Sapa to Hanoi airport.
A full days birding for Brown Dipper, Spot-breasted, Masked, White-browed Laughingthrushes, Slaty-bellied Tesia, Slaty-backed, Spotted, Little Forktails, White-capped Redstar, Vinous-throated and Ashy-throated Parrotbills. before take a drive via Express at evening and reaching Hanoi airport at morning.
Day 10:
An International departures from Ho Chi Minh International Airport.
